The 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series kicks off at Lake Martin on Feb. 8-11. More than 100 of the world’s best bass anglers will compete for the $100,000 first-place prize as the 11-event circuit begins its season in Alabama.
Among the circuit’s top competitors are Brandon Palaniuk, the reigning Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year, seven-time Angler of the Year winner Kevin VanDam. The Elite Series is considered the top tier of the sport.
The Elite Series is making its first visit to Lake Martin.
Takeoff at the event begins at 6:15 a.m. on Feb. 8 at Wind Creek State Park with the National Anthem. The public is invited to attend. Weigh-ins are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the same location as takeoff, with anglers weighing in their catches on stage with B.A.S.S. emcee Dave Mercer and Tournament Director Trip Weldon.
Chad Miller, an Eclectic, Alabama, angler who won the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Lake Martin in November, said that fishing a number of styles could lead to success.
“You can catch them right now in 1 foot of water all the way out to 40 feet of water,” Miller said in a B.A.S.S. news release. “I think it’s anybody’s ball game because of that. I think it could be won with 12 pounds a day — and if somebody can find a couple of 5-pounders, they can blow it away for sure.”
The event is being hosted by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce.
