Alabama Power is preparing to begin the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission process to update its Shoreline Management Plan for the Martin Dam Project (FERC No. 349). This process involves an evaluation of the current Shoreline Management Plan to ensure that shoreline development is consistent with the protection and enhancement of environmental, scenic, cultural and recreational values, while ensuring the continued safe and reliable production of hydroelectric power at the Project.
On July 18, Alabama Power will host an Information Meeting at Central Alabama Community College (1675 Cherokee Rd., Alexander City, AL 35010), from 2-4 p.m. in the media room.
The meeting’s purpose is to present and receive feedback on the current Shoreline Management Plan and permitting program.
Alabama Power issues shoreline permits consistent with its FERC license for any activities within Martin reservoir. Most residential permits are issued through the company’s local shoreline office after appropriate review. Permits for non-residential structures over the water, including marinas, go through a process involving state and federal agency review. These include a public comment period and submission of an application to FERC for approval before a permit can be issued. Alabama Power has no authority over activities that occur on property outside the FERC project boundary established in the company’s license.
This meeting is free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided. If you plan to attend, please call Kristi Cheaney at 256-825-0053 on or before July 14.
