Starting October 1, Alabama Power will lower the water levels of Weiss, Neely Henry, and Logan Martin Lakes on the Coosa River, and Lake Harris in Wedowee on the Tallapoosa River.

Lake Martin’s drawdown started on September 1, per its Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license. Lake Martin’s license includes a potential conditional fall extension, and the current criteria for the fall extension are not met due to extreme temperatures and lack of rainfall.

Lake levels across Alabama Power’s other reservoirs are already lower than usual for this time of the year also because of these recent weather conditions.

Alabama Power follows a specific plan to gradually lower the lake levels each fall that is set by FERC. The company will allow reservoirs to refill to the guide curves if there is adequate rainfall but must meet water release requirements determined by FERC and in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The company keeps an eye on changing conditions throughout the drawdown process. The entire drawdown process takes several weeks and is expected to finish by November 30.

Lake levels are lowered in the fall to prepare for winter and spring rains, which helps prevent flooding from heavy rainstorms while also supporting other water needs. By May, the water levels are raised again for people to enjoy recreational activities.

“Our lakes and river systems have multiple uses, including recreational activities, aquatic wildlife habitats, flood operations, and navigational purposes, as well as being a water supply source for agricultural, municipal and industrial uses,” said Chad Kendrick, general manager of Hydro for Alabama Power. “Through our water management practices, we aim to support these operations by controlling levels and releasing water.” Alabama Power encourages people with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities to pay close attention to the changing conditions on the lake, remain mindful of personal safety and be prepared to take necessary steps to protect their property.
