Alabama Power will conduct annual testing of warning sirens downstream of Lay and Mitchell dams on Friday, Sept. 29. The sirens will sound at or around noon, preceded by a voice announcement.

The sirens are part of safety measures in place to alert residents downstream of the dams in the unlikely event of a structural failure. No action is required from residents when the scheduled tests take place.

“Alabama Power regularly tests our siren systems to ensure we are fully prepared in any situation,” said Herbie Johnson, Hydro General Manager. “These tests are part of requirements from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which licenses our dams. Safety is our top priority and we approach these requirements with utmost seriousness and commitment.”

The sirens are located less than a mile downstream from the dams. They are separate from the horns on the dams, which warn the public about sudden water discharges when a turbine is activated or a spillway gate is opened.
