Alabama Power is set to conduct its annual testing of warning sirens located downstream of the Lay and Mitchell dams on Tuesday, September 30. The sirens will be activated around noon, following a voice announcement.
These sirens are an integral part of the safety protocols designed to alert residents in the unlikely event of a dam structural failure. During these scheduled tests, residents are not required to take any action.
“We routinely test our siren systems to ensure we are prepared for any situation,” stated Dax Bumpers, Hydro General Manager. “These tests are mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which licenses our dams. Safety is our highest priority, and we approach these requirements with the utmost seriousness and dedication.”
Positioned less than a mile downstream from the dams, the sirens are distinct from the horns located on the dams. The horns are used to warn the public about sudden water discharges when a turbine is activated, or a spillway gate is opened.
