Alabama Power’s day-use parks allow visitors to see all the lakes have to offer
Located on the eastern edge of the embankment that holds back the lake topped by the aptly named Logan Martin Road, Logan Martin Picnic Area provides visitors a relaxing spot to view the lake, dam and an occasional run of skiers through the lake’s most visited slalom course.
A mainstay of Alabama Power-operated parks, Logan Martin Dam Park is also one of its more low-key places to relax. The park’s 19 structures include a fishing pier, grills, pavilions and picnic tables upgraded after tornado damage in 2011. The park is open from sunrise to sunset.
“The park is open year-round and is a real asset to Logan Martin Lake. Visitors can come any time during the day and see all that the lake has to offer,” says Rob Coyne, Alabama Power shoreline manager for Logan Martin Lake.
One of Alabama Power’s newest day-use parks, Barrett’s Park on Lake Mitchell continues to grow each lake season.
“It’s a great place for families to come and enjoy the lake. We have people out there all the time using the grills, fishing and swimming,” says Candy Hayes, shoreline manager for Alabama Power.
While Barrett’s Park is nestled in Lake Mitchell’s remote Hatchet Creek area, the park provides boater access and parking, a pier and boardwalk along the water, public restrooms, grills and picnic tables.
“Fishermen especially like to use this park to launch their boats. It’s very convenient, and we even have had bass tournaments launch from here,” Hayes adds.
Each year, Alabama Power welcomes thousands of visitors to its five day-use parks” and more than 45 public access sites on 11 reservoirs on the Coosa, Tallapoosa and Warrior rivers. These lakes — built to provide clean, renewable hydropower for customers — also provide beauty and all kinds of opportunity for recreation.
Alabama Power and its state and local partners operate and maintain dozens of boat ramps and bank fishing access sites along the shoreline. The company maintains thousands of acres of natural and undeveloped land along the lakes for use by hikers, bird watchers and primitive-use campers.
