Observed May 16-22, National Safe Boating Week reminds Alabamians to refresh their boating safety skills as lake season begins. With warmer weather drawing more visitors to Alabama’s scenic lakes, it’s vital to make safety the top priority.

Life jackets remain the most effective lifesaving tool on the water. By law, all boats must carry properly sized, wearable personal flotation devices (PFDs) for each person onboard, and children under eight must always wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that 70% of recreational boating deaths involve drowning, and 85% of those victims were not wearing life jackets. When it comes to selecting the right type, there are five categories plus throwable devices—each based on your activity and conditions.

To ensure a safe outing, the National Safe Boating Council recommends:

  • Take a boating safety course to gain knowledge and hands-on experience.
  • Complete a vessel safety check with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons to confirm all required equipment is onboard and functional.
  • File a float plan with someone onshore detailing your trip and passengers.
  • Use an engine cut-off device, now required by law, to stop the boat if the operator falls overboard.
  • Monitor weather conditions and adjust plans accordingly.
  • Navigate responsibly, following local speed zones and staying alert.
  • Avoid boating under the influence—alcohol is a leading factor in fatal accidents.
  • Stay connected with waterproof communication tools such as VHF radios or emergency beacons.
  • Wear life jackets at all times.

Following these guidelines helps everyone enjoy Alabama’s lakes safely and responsibly throughout the boating season. For lake information, download the Shorelines app on your mobile device.
