More rain expected; Weiss Lake expected to rise above summer level

Because of the recent heavy rains, Alabama Power will continue operating spillway gates for the next few days at Weiss, Henry, Logan Martin, Lay and Jordan dams on the Coosa River.

Weiss Lake is expected to peak near elevation 565 feet, which is about 2 feet above summer level, on or around Sunday, Feb. 9.

The National Weather Service is forecasting more rain next week that could impact Alabama Power lakes.

“Because our lakes will already be at higher levels as these next rains hit, we expect that several of the lakes will rise to levels above their normal summer levels,” said Alan Peeples, with Alabama Power Reservoir Management. “We ask people around the lakes to pay close attention to weather conditions as we move into next week.”

During rain events, Alabama Power engineers evaluate conditions to project peak lake levels and share that information with the public. Alabama Power provides updates to those projections as necessary. Individuals with boats and other water-related equipment and facilities should always be alert to changing conditions on Alabama Power reservoirs and be prepared to take the necessary steps to protect their property.
